Al-Qaeda militant from Telangana identified using key document

Al-Qaeda militant from Telangana identified using key document

Police in Telangana confirmed on Wednesday that an alleged militant killed in south Kashmir's Anantnag district this week belonged to the southern state, confirming speculation that a citizen outside of the Jammu and Kashmir region had been radicalised. According to reports, this could be the first time that a militant outside the state died to fight in Kashmir.

Soon after the encounter got over late on Monday, J&K Police had identified two of the militants killed as Mohammad Eisa Fazili (22) of Soura, Srinagar, and Syed Owais Shafi (22) of Kokernag, Islamabad, and the third as a foreigner. "Further details are being verified and will be updated to the media accordingly". In the process, he managed to come in contact with Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGUH) - an organisation allegedly having links with the al-Qaeda in Kashmir.

Three militants, including Fazli and Owais, both of whom left their B.Tech third year course to join militancy, were killed in the encounter by security forces on the intervening night of March 11 and 12, a development seen as a blow to the attempts by the ISIS to gain ground in the Kashmir valley. The outfit unit is led by wanted militant leader Zakir Musa.

A key document that was recovered from the possession of slain al-Qaeda militant Mohammed Toufeeq helped security forces in South Kashmir identify and confirm that he was from Telangana.

Mohammad Taufiq joined the terror front in 2017 and reached Kashmir.

The body of the militant, which was not claimed by anyone, was buried in a graveyard for foreign militants in the Gantmulla area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Tuesday night. Police are also interrogating Taufeeq's family members. It is learned that he was one of the militants who were in the top ranks of the outfit.
