Why The #MeToo Movement Is Giving International Women's Day a Boost

In his United Nations address, Secretary General Antonio Guterres acknowledged that "There are more girls in school than ever before; more women are doing paid work and in senior roles in the private sector, academia, politics, and in global organizations" but also that "sexual harassment and abuse have been thriving in workplaces, public spaces, and private homes, in countries that pride themselves on their record of gender equality".

Several other powerful actors, producers and politicians have since been called out by the women they harassed using their privileged positions of authority.

"Time for equality and opportunity, respect and equal representation".

Running under the worldwide theme "Time is Now: Rural and Urban Activists Transforming Women's Lives" and the national theme "Transforming Women's Lives through Economic empowerment", the day is set to elebrate economic, political and social achievements of women, their courage and significant determination in contributing to the country's wellbeing. "As we still live in a male-dominated world with male-dominated culture and until power is fairly shared, the world will remain out of balance". There are more girls in school than ever before. It is in the interest of us all - the fans, the families, and every girl and woman who has been able to fully realise her dreams through athletic participation.

"These companies are driving positive change in their workplaces and literally shining a spotlight on the need for all of us to do more because they recognize that progress for women is progress for everyone", Deborah Gillis, president and CEO of Catalyst, said in a statement.

The theme for this year's International Women's Day is "Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women's lives" with the Campaign Theme of #PressforProgress.
