UN Official Demanded to Stop the Ethnic Cleansing in Myanmar

UN Official Demanded to Stop the Ethnic Cleansing in Myanmar

"Ultimately, the world can not allow the authors of this brutal case of ethnic cleansing - which many believe may constitute genocide - to be rewarded", Andrew Gilmour said at the end of a four-day visit to Bangladesh where refugees, who have been fleeing Myanmar since last August, are located.

Gilmour said the ongoing violence makes it impossible to send Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh back to Myanmar.

The museum announced Wednesday that the Elie Wiesel Award given to Suu Kyi in 2012 would be rescinded.

"We had hoped that you-as someone we and many others have celebrated for your commitment to human dignity and universal human rights-would have done something to condemn and stop the military's brutal campaign", the museum explained.

More than 40,000 people have been "lost" and are presumed dead after being forced to migrate to neighboring Bangladesh, according to a report published by ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) earlier this month.

The museum's decision is perhaps the strongest rebuke yet of Ms Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been increasingly criticised as a seemingly unrepentant apologist for Buddhist nationalism and the Myanmar military's campaign of ethnic violence.

At least 9,000 Rohingya were killed in Rakhine state from August 25 to September 24 a year ago, according to Doctors Without Borders.

Though she has set up half a dozen commissions to look into the violence, which began after Rohingya militants attacked Myanmar security posts, the authorities continue to insist that no Rohingya civilians have been harmed. While Myanmar shows the thumb at the United Nations by refusing to let in neutral observers to see for themselves what has happened in the state of Rakhine, how long will it be before the world's inaction convinces the Myanmar government that it faces no serious threat in terms of punitive sanctions?

Meanwhile, a senior Bangladesh cabinet minister has accused Myanmar of obstructing efforts to repatriate roughly 750,000 Rohingya refugees, saying it was unlikely the displaced Muslims would ever return to their homeland, according to AFP.

Sara Bloomfield, director of the Holocaust Museum, wrote: "Based on..." Myanmar has denied citizenship to Rohingya since 1982 and excludes them from the 135 ethnic groups it officially recognizes, which effectively renders them stateless.

Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi is guided by US National Park Service Ranger Heath Mitchell (R) as she visits the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, in 2016. "Silence encourages the tormenter, never the tormented", the museum added in its press statement, quoting Elie Wiesel.
