Mario Tennis Aces Serves Up Fun on June 22

As expected Nintendo dropped the release date for Mario Tennis Aces on today's Nintendo Direct, and as previously leaked, the game will launch on June 22. More than 15 characters will be playable in Mario Tennis Aces, among them Nintendo stalwarts such as Mario, Waluigi and Donkey Kong as well as more surprising characters like Chain Chomp and Toadette.

Mario Tennis Aces' online multiplayer will let you play with far away friends for up to 4P multiplayer.

Lastly, players won't be confined to using only a single control scheme. It will also serve as an effective way to line-up your swings to counter an incoming Zone or Special Shot. Taking three hits will break a racket, and if you have no rackets left, you forfeit the match.

You can also block Zone Shots with a block, which protects your racket and saves you from a humiliating defeat. We're also quite thrilled to see Nintendo return to Mario Tennis so quickly after 2015's Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash was met with an overwhelmingly negative reaction. It's more about deep strategic play this time around. Considering that the primary criticisms of that game revolved around its lack of content and innovations, we'd say that the quick reveal of Mario Tennis Ace's story mode suggests that Nintendo is aware of what went wrong and is willing to fix it. We wouldn't be surprised if we saw more info emerge at E3, just before the game hits the market.

Perhaps more surprisingly Nintendo announced that there will be a pre-launch online tournament (1v1), but details of this beta test of sorts will be announced at a later date. The details will come at a later time.
