Cross-country skier Brian McKeever to carry Canada's flag into Paralympics opening ceremony

Cross-country skier Brian McKeever to carry Canada's flag into Paralympics opening ceremony

"After discussion with the North, the two Koreas decided not to march together at the opening ceremony", the South's Yonhap news agency quoted the South Korean Paralympic Committee (KPC) as saying on Thursday.

NORTH and South Korean athletes will march separately at the Winter Paralympics opening ceremony, organisers said today, despite a recent Olympics-driven detente between the neighbours.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) had offered both countries the chance to march together under the same conditions as last month's Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in Pyeongchang. He talked of the process which the IOC had begun in 2014 to get the athletes from the National Olympic Committee of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea to the Olympic Winter Games.

North Korea's controversial participation in the Olympics helped ease tensions between the North and the United States, and Japan, over its nuclear and missiles programmes which it conducts in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions and sanctions. "We have more broadcasters than ever before set to cover the Winter Paralympics which shows the growing global interest in para sport".

Since the first meeting in early January, North and South Korea have held several landmark meetings.

Athletes from the North and South staged a joint march at the opening of last month's Winter Olympics under a neutral "unification flag", part of an intense rapprochement that also saw Pyongyang send hundreds of cheerleaders and leader Kim Jong Un's sister to the ceremony.

"We wanted to have a moment of harmony for a peaceful Paralympics and Korean unity, but made a decision to respect each other's stance on the issue", the South's Korean Paralympic Committee said in a statement, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Another likely star for the PyeongChang Games is French skier Marie Bochet, who came away from Sochi with four golds at the age of 20.

In 2008 Schultz suffered injuries in a snocross race that resulted in having his left leg amputated above the knee when the snowmobile he was riding landed on his leg.

With only 11% of tickets remaining, the Paralympics are ahead of Olympic sales in percentage terms.

PyeongChang 2018 President Hee-Beom Lee says "thank you for your support" to all journalists who covered the Olympics. "It is going to be a wonderful 10 days that we will never forget".
