Canada adds Playa del Carmen to Mexican travel advisory

Playa del Carmen is located about 46 miles (76 km) south of Mexico's top beach destination, Cancun, part of a long strip of white sand beach-front resorts that attracts global tourists.

The alert, issued Wednesday night, says US government employees have to cease traveling to the town "immediately" and "until further notice".

The warnings come after an explosion on a tourist ferry in Playa del Carmen last month injured more than 20 people.

Economic activity and tourism in Playa del Carmen and throughout the state continues as usual, continued the statement.

According to the embassy's website, travelers should be "aware of their surroundings" and "exercise caution".

Candles and condolence messages are seen outside the Blue Parrot nightclub in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on January 17, 2017.

The government of the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo said that President Enrique Pena Nieto was scheduled to attend an ocean conservation conference in Playa del Carmen on Thursday.

It also required USA government officials cease traveling to the city "immdiately", according to the alert. Local media reported that two other similar devices were later found attached to another ferry on the nearby island of Cozumel, also a major tourist draw, but neither detonated. "Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you need assistance".

"Some cruise lines have cancelled excursions using ferry services in Playa del Carmen", the travel alert ads, "Avoid tourist ferries travelling in the region until further notice, be vigilant and monitor local media (including social media)".

"In Mexico alone, we've issued a number of recent security alerts as soon as we received information that travelers should know", the statement said. The state of Quintana Roo also comes with a Level 2 warning.

The Canadian government has added Mexico's most popular tourist destination to its list of travel advisories for the country. "While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by US citizens".
