The beauty of International Women's Day lies in the fact that it is not limited to any particular group or any one cause.

Sound and Music has launched a month-long programme ahead of International Women's Day (IWD) this Thursday, aimed at opening up the debate and championing female composers.

Purple is used to symbolise International Women's Day, but historically it was green, white and purple; purple to symbolise dignity, white for purity and green for hope. The day includes rallies, performances, networking events and marches that take place all over the world.

This modern interpretation of Judy Chicago's 1979 feminist piece "The Dinner Party", will take place at 7 New York City Baha'i Center (53 E. 11th St.) and is "a celebration of women and vaginas throughout herstory" featuring spoken word artists, music, food and more. From 1910 to 1917, IWD observances were held in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Austria, and Russian Federation, among other places, mainly as the result of union and social democratic party activism. 1975 was a red-letter year in the history of IWD as the year was observed as the International Women's Year by the United Nations. Gender equality is enshrined in countless laws, and harmful practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage have been outlawed in many countries.

There is an equally important need to focus attention on the next step - making it easier for more women to get to the top.

The history of all times and of today most especially has taught that the women will be forgotten if they also forget to think of themselves. Similarly, Costa Rica's Banco Nacional has promoted dozens of women into managerial roles; the bank is now a leading regional provider of financing to female entrepreneurs. IWD is about celebrating successes and about keeping your eye on what is happening internationally in global sisterhood.

But it has also become a day to highlight the struggles, inequality and oppression women still face in modern society.

The 2018 theme is "Time is Now: Rural and Women's Activists Transforming Women's Lives".

It gives me great pleasure to address you on the occasion of International Women's Day 2018.

In 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland celebrated the first official International Women's Day on March 19.

This theme surely conveys an idea and make a move towards the gender equality among individuals.

It's also interesting to note that there is a competing global IWD campaign, supported not by the United Nations but by a conglomerate of corporate and non-governmental organizations.

It is time for men to march with the women in their life and support the fight for equality and equal pay.

Women in Latin America are aware that progress toward justice is hard won, and that there is much work left to be done.
