Basketball star Kevin Love opens up about panic attacks

In a candid letter to The Players Tribune, Love opened up about a panic attack that occurred in November in a matchup with the Atlanta Hawks.

Love also wrote, "Mental health isn't just an athlete thing".

"I know you don't just get rid of problems by talking about them, but I've learned that over time maybe you can better understand them and make them more manageable", he wrote.

DeRozan said the response to his remarks has been "positive", and reacted to Love's essay in an interview with ESPN, saying, "It made me feel, you know, pretty damn good, honestly".

Love has not played since January 30 as he nurses his way back to health after suffering a broken bone in his left hand.

"This just one more example of the willingness to kind of go above and beyond and say not only am I going to work on my physical engine, I'm going to work on my mental one as well", said Dr. Erin Ayala, Premier Sport Psychology, PLLC.

Love noted how he's previously followed the "man's "playbook" of how to deal with mental stressors: internalize it, don't share. The act of getting out of my chair and walking to the door felt like a marathon. Love revealed he's regularly visiting a therapist and opening up about his life.

For Love, the episode was a "wake-up call" about the stigma surrounding mental health issues that prevented him from seeking help.

No story is the same, no pain is the same.

Love, who is now seeing a therapist, had another panic attack in January, according to a report from Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com.

Kevin Love wants everyone to know it is okay to seek help.

I was winded within the first few possessions.

As I wait for my duty as Daddy, my thumb moves up and down searching for a tweet that catches my eye.

"In the National Basketball Association, you have trained professionals to fine-tune your life in so many areas". At some point it occurred to me that giving a five-minute speech in front of a few dozen people I knew in college almost crippled me, but I could walk up to a professional athlete in some stage of undress at his locker and ask him a question that was probably only important to me without breaking a sweat. "But creating a better environment for talking about mental health ... that's where we need to get to". Not even 24 hours after he shared the essay on his Twitter page, the article had been retweeted more than 33,000 times and liked more than 80,000 times. On the court, I think the expectations for the season, combined with our 4-5 start, were weighing on me. It was then he realized he had experienced a panic attack.

"By that point, I was freaking out", Love continued.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that between 2013 and 2016, 8.1 percent of American adults 20 years old and older had depression in a given two-week period.
