Turkey detains four Iraqi nationals for planning attack on US Embassy

Turkish police detained four Daesh (ISIS) suspects as part of an investigation into a possible attack on the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, the country's state-run news agency reported Monday.

"Both the intelligence service and security forces have taken extra measures, and important results have been achieved", he said, without elaborating.

The embassy also advised American citizens in Turkey to avoid large crowds, USA diplomatic buildings, to be aware of their security when visiting popular sites, and to keep a low profile.

On March 5, the US Embassy in Ankara will be closed to visitors in connection with a security threat, a statement published by the press service of the US embassy to Turkey said. "The Embassy will announce its reopening, once it resumes services".

The detentions came after the Ankara Governor's Office stated late on March 4 that extra security measures had been taken in the city upon intelligence that "terrorist actions" could take place in areas where US citizens are located.

The Ankara Public Prosecutor's Office announced earlier that it had issued detention warrants for 20 suspects and the search was underway to capture the others.

Though the relationship between the USA and Turkey has recently been tested, Turkey says the embassy's closure isn't political. In 2013, a suicide bomber attacked conducted an attack, killing himself and a Turkish security guard.

A total of 3,000 Daesh terrorists were killed in Operation Euphrates Shield in Syria, Bozdağ said, while 1,000 others were killed trying to attack the Turkish camp in Iraq's Bashiqa.

Turkey suffered multiple terror attacks in 2015 and 2016 as well as one in 2017 blamed on IS and outlawed Kurdish militants. An attack at a luxury Istanbul nightclub during New Year celebrations on January 1, 2017, killed 39 people.
