Guatemala to move its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem in May

"His courageous decision has encouraged us to do what is right", Morales said in a speech at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual policy conference, according to a translation of his remarks on the pro-Israel United States lobbying group's website.

The Guatemalan ambassador was on the streets of occupied Jerusalem Monday to look at properties for when it joins the United States in moving its embassy there, a move Palestinians said was illegal and could kill any chance of peace. "In May of this year, we will celebrate Israel's 70th anniversary, and under my instructions, two days after the United States moves its embassy, Guatemala will return and permanently move its embassy to Jerusalem". "It's the right thing to do", said Morales.

The Guatemalan leader also agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that more countries will follow Washington's lead. "His courageous decision has encouraged us to do what is right", said Morales, according to a translation of his comments on the pro-Israel lobbying group's website.

Before visiting Guatemala, Haley also met with the recently-reelected president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez, to greet him for the controversial electoral victory and also thank him for his support of Israel.

The Palestinians fumed over Trump's move.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said his country will move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May.

The White House plans to open its new facility in Jerusalem on May 14, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of Israel's creation.

The Israeli government considers the entire city to be its undivided capital, although the global consensus is that the city's status should be decided through negotiations and not unilateral moves.

In a briefing with reporters after his speech, Morales said he's extended "an invitation to other countries" to follow his lead.

In a December 2017 the U.N. General Assembly voted on a resolution condemning Trump's decision.
