White House to highlight administration anti-opioid efforts

At a White House meeting that was called to discuss the #Opioid abuse epidemic that is spreading across America, Trump said that the dealers of opioids are "killing hundreds and hundreds of people" and, as he sees it, they're not being duly punished. "We're going to have a level playing field".

"Some countries have a very, very tough penalty, the ultimate penalty", the president said.

The comments follow Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Feb. 28 announcement of a new Department of Justice task force launched to increase scrutiny on opioid makers and distributors.

According to Wikipedia more than 14,000 people have been killed since Duterte declared a war on drugs and ordered the police and military to kill drug dealers without due process. There were some well-known names among them, including former congresswoman Mary Bono, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi who was a member of the president's opioid commission, the first lady of North Dakota Kathryn Helgaas Burgum who is herself recovering from opioid addiction and former Fox News personality Eric Bolling whose son died of an opioid overdose. In a remarkably rare step, though, Sessions responded to the President in a statement, stating that the process he initiated was "appropriate" and will "ensure complaints against this department will be fully and fairly acted upon if necessary". Dismayed by the way HUD has handled the stories, White House aides have taken a more hands-on role in trying to stem the tide of negative news. Shulkin recently apologized to VA staff after the agency's Office of the Inspector General alleged Shulkin improperly accepted a gift of Wimbledon tickets during a work trip to London. Carson has since asked HUD to cancel the order.

Trump would be well-advised to focus on the public health component of the opioid crisis.

The White House is hosting the summit to highlight Trump administration efforts to combat the opioid crisis.

Additionally, both the House and Senate are working in a large package of bills addressing the epidemic, but none of the lawmakers are on the list of summit attendees provided by the White House.
