California Democrats decline to endorse Feinstein

"State Senate leader Kevin de León, who is challenging Feinstein from the left, won the support of 54 percent of the Democratic delegates, compared to 37 percent support for Feinstein". The state party will not officially endorse either candidate, however, since both failed to meet the 60 percent threshold.

This means that neither Feinstein or de Leon will receive the added campaign funds for the June primary that is given to the candidate that has the official endorsement of the party.

"California Democrats are hungry for new leadership that will fight for California values from the front lines, not equivocate on the sidelines", he said.

California Democrats didn't endorse in the governor's race, the state's other marquee contest this year. A poll by the Public Policy Institute of California this month found her leading Mr.de León by a margin of 46 percent to 17 percent.

Party leaders also implored activists to rally behind one candidate in U.S. House races with as many as seven Democratic hopefuls, warning a failure to unite could boost Republicans.

The LA Times notes that "California has grown more liberal, Feinstein has angered part of the Democratic Party's base by her perceived moderation, including her call for "patience" with President Trump."

The vote came after de Leon delivered a blistering speech that reflects deep divisions among Democrats about how to respond to Trump.

California Democrats held their convention in San Diego over the weekend.

"California's greatness comes from acts of human audacity, not congressional seniority", de Leon said.

Feinstein, the oldest member of the Senate at 84, is seeking a sixth term.

But de Leon, who authored "sanctuary state" legislation to limit California authorities from cooperating with federal immigration officials, has argued that Feinstein historically failed to stand up for young immigrants brought to the US illegally as children.
