Mueller ups pressure on Trump campaign aides

Mueller ups pressure on Trump campaign aides

In Federal court in Washington received a document with new accusations against the former head of the election headquarters of the President of the United States Donald trump Paul Manafort and former Advisor staff Rick gates, reported in Wednesday's edition of Politico.

A long-time Washington and worldwide political consultant, Manafort served as Trump's election campaign chairman from June to August 2016, with Gates his deputy.

The investigation by the USA attorney's office in Manhattan is focused on possible money laundering, and the two probes are intertwined, the person said.

Mueller explained in a status report that some of the new charges could not be brought in Washington without the approval of the defendants. Calk was seeking to become Mr. Trump's Army secretary, according to three people briefed on the interactions, The Wall Street Journal reported past year. Calk did not ultimately get a job in the current administration. Mr. Calk's overtures raised questions among military leaders as to how to respond, this person said.

The White House did not comment to NBC News on whether Manafort had sought a position in Trump's cabinet for Calk. The latter was being done by Robert Mueller, the special counsel.

The new indictment contains 32 counts, including tax charges. Numerous alleged crimes date back to years to before the 2016 campaign, but some continued past Election Day.

Earlier this week, Gates had reportedly agreed to a plea deal with Mueller regarding his work with Manafort - much of which involved the regime of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was officially ousted from power four years ago today.

The indictment adds that Manafort, "with the assistance" of Gates, laundered some $30 million - "income that [Manafort] concealed" from the Treasury and Justice Departments. If Gates agrees to cooperate in the probe, that could put more pressure on Manafort and others who worked in the Trump campaign.

On Friday, Mueller was sent to the court documents, which said that his investigation has revealed additional facts of "criminal behavior" Manafort, "including several cases of Bank fraud".
