Atlanta, two other cities in AT&T 5G network rollout

Atlanta, two other cities in AT&T 5G network rollout

AT&T plans to roll out 5G wireless coverage to a dozen cities during the remainder of 2018, among them Waco.

AT&T earlier announced it would launch high speed 5G services in the United States year and now the company has identified the first markets. Customers in parts of the Georgia and Texas cities "will be the very first to access this next generation of wireless services", said AT&T senior VP Igal Elbaz.

In preparation of launching its 5G mobile network in 2018, AT&T Inc. announced February 21 it will open a 5G lab in North Austin this spring, a representative confirmed.

AT&T did not say where the 5G network will initially be deployed in the Atlanta area.

Mobile 5G is coming this year, and now we know the first cities that'll get it.

Last month, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson explained that its initial 5G devices will be "pucks" - mobile hotspots - rather than smartphones, which will be at best hard to find this year. The lab is also equipped with an outdoor 5G testbed to trial a variety of 5G applications and real-world use cases, including the Advanced 5G NR Testbed System (ANTS), proprietary to AT&T. It's not the clearest thing ever, because they mention 5G Evolution (which is not 5G), as well as LTE-LAA, which is now a piece of everyone's LTE network. Eventually the technology will be deployed on additional spectrum bands.

"Ultimately, we expect to reach theoretical peak speeds of multiple gigabits per second on devices through mobile 5G", the company wrote in a Wednesday blog post.

Telecommunications experts estimate that 5G speeds will be about 10 times faster than 4G, which is presently the mobile standard.
