What Is Photos Companion? Microsoft's iOS App Quickly Transfers Photos To PC

Users can start a video or photo project in the Photos app on the PC, and then add more videos and photos from the phone directly into that project.

The transfer service is based around QR codes and Wi-Fi and works so long as the Windows 10 PC is on the same network as the Android or iOS device you want to move photos or videos from. As we mentioned, your devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network to let you successfully transfer content.

Microsoft today announced its Photos Companion app for Android and iOS that allows an expedited transfer of photos and videos from mobile phones to Windows 10 PCs.

The previous update made the Photos app nearly a truly universal app, though some advanced features such as Story Remix were missing on mobile. Users select the photos they want to transfer from the companion app and then use settings in the Photos app to begin transferring them over Wi-Fi. This way there is no requirement of using the same Wi-Fi on the mobile and PC to transfer.

"While we built the Photos Companion with students and educators in mind, we know it will be useful to anyone who is looking to complete an epic video project, send media to a friend's PC, or just get that one special photo onto their computer so it can be edited and turned into the next great post, cover photo, or presentation", according to a Microsoft post. The app works by temporarily linking (via QR code) to the Windows 10 photos app.

If you're a OneDrive user or you already backup phone photos to another cloud service, this new app probably isn't for you, but Microsoft has primarily designed this for students. You can easily get your required media by accessing your cloud account. The tech giant has launched a new Photos Companion app for iOS and Android devices which has been in testing for some months.

Under Preview, turn on the toggle button that says "Help Microsoft test the mobile import over WiFi feature".
