England fail to match Williamson, Guptill

The leg-spinner's next delivery accounted for Colin de Grandhomme, but this time he had Chris Jordan's flawless fielding to thank rather than mere good fortune.

England gave a decent account of themselves with the bat, Alex Hales racing to 47 and Dawid Malan making a neat 59, but a regular tumble of wickets left them 184 for nine at the close.

New Zealand managed to bag their first win of the T20I Tri-series as England lost their third match chasing 197 for victory.

England opener Jason Roy insists his side possess a fierce determination to retaliate following back-to-back defeats to Australia as they bid to ignite their Twenty20 tri-series campaign against New Zealand on Tuesday. Pace off the ball kept him in check but, for some reason, England abandoned the tactic and insisted on hitting him with pace at the end of his innings.

Mark Wood will curse the errant throw which spared Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson on nought - he went on to make a match-high 72 and saved much of the punishment for Wood - but the tourists were outmatched.

England have zero points and need Australia to do them a favour to take their chances of reaching the final into their last game against New Zealand on Sunday, 25 February.

New Zealand got a flying start via Martin Guptill who hit six fours and three sixes in his 65 off 40 balls against England.

The tri-series caravan had moved to New Zealand where the hosts were to take on the English side.

Williamson's innings included four sixes as he and Guptill put on 82 for the second wicket.

Colin Munro tried and failed to follow suit, flapping Wood to fine leg, bringing Williamson to the crease.

"I thought the ball was going to roll a bit further.then it didn't", he said of his misjudged single.

'We don't play a huge amount of worldwide Twenty20s and the boys haven't played an terrible lot of this game over the last few months so we've got to work out why we're slow in locating the rhythm needed for the shorter game.

Instead of New Zealand's batsmen struggling, the visiting bowlers made harder work of it.

"We've had a couple of losses in a row, which hasn't been what we've wanted but we've just been looking at how we've been playing and how we want to try and improve, and when we do that's when the results happen for us".
