Police Raid House Of Zuma's Allies In Graft Probe

Duvenage said his organisation would "oppose any deal that allowed Zuma to escape accountability for his involvement in criminal activities". "I don't understand. I don't agree with it".

"The only way to remove Jacob Zuma as president of our country is for parliament to do so through a motion of no confidence", the Democratic Alliance (DA) tweeted. When he countered by asking to remain in office for up to six months, the party bosses said enough is enough.

Opposition parties have called for early elections as the ANC's turbulent transfer of power to Ramaphosa grinds on.

ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule said the party's national executive was split on when Zuma should step down, although the party expected him to respond to the order by Wednesday.

After almost 10 hours of heated debate, Ramaphosa and Magashule left the meeting shortly before midnight to drive to the president's official residence to deliver an ultimatum: stand down or face "recall", a technical term for the process of forcing an ANC official to leave their post.

Mr. Zuma has been ordered to resign by the ruling ANC party, and is expected to respond to the order later in the day.

"Recalling" the head of state is a party-level instruction that the 75-year-old Zuma is under no constitutional obligation to obey.

The Guptas, three Indian-born brothers with close ties to Zuma, are accused by South Africa's anti-graft body of using their links with the President for financial gain.

The rand raced to the milestone just after the ANC's parliamentary caucus said it would support a motion of no-confidence brought by an opposition party against Zuma due to be heard in the house on Thursday.

If Zuma resists, he will face a vote of no confidence in parliament.

"The era of Jacob Zuma's presidency will be known as a period of personal enrichment, excessive political appointments and interference in the economy that was never in the best interests of the country, giving rise to shameless corruption, gross maladministration and incompetence".

South Africa's top court had ruled that Zuma violated the country's constitution following an investigation of multimillion-dollar upgrades to his private home that were paid for by the state.

Both Zuma and the Guptas deny the accusations.

Zuma has survived similar motions in the past, but ruling party members now see him as a political liability ahead of next year's elections and likely would vote against him on the orders of the party leadership.

The ANC said it wants Zuma to be replaced by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was elected party leader in December and has vowed to fight corruption.

Earlier Wednesday, police raided the Johannesburg home of the Gupta business family accused of overseeing a web of corruption under Zuma's rule.
