Today will be a great deal milder than tomorrow, with highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees.

But today, temperatures in the day will reach a maximum of around 9 degree Celsius, with a few outbreaks of rain from the west this morning.

Forecasters warned of sub-zero temperatures as parts of the North Pennines in County Durham were pictured blanketed in snow.

Accumulations of rain of up to 35mm, thunder and flooding are expected over the 24hours.

A snow-ice warning has been put in place for the whole country, with snowfall of up to 3cm expected. However, persistent or heavy rain will spread from the west through the late afternoon and evening.
