Undocumented immigrant targeted in Trump tweet has Bay Area ties

The driver suspected of hitting and killing National Football League linebacker Edwin Jackson and his ride-share driver on Sunday had a prior conviction for driving under the influence and had twice been deported, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Investigators said Jackson, 26, and his Uber driver, 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, were standing outside Monroe's vehicle when they were struck and killed by a pickup truck driven by Orrego-Savala.

IN police identified the suspect as Manuel Orrego-Savala, a Guatemalan national.

Orrego-Savala was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in October 2006, and deported to Guatemala in January 2007, according to a federal criminal complaint.

He remained jailed Tuesday but has not been formally charged in the crash.

Jackson played 16 games with the Colts in 2016 but spent the a year ago on injured reserve.

He is now being held in the Marion County (Indiana) jail, and police are working with United States federal immigration officials to determine their next step.

A judge on Wednesday entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf and set his bond at $200,000. Orrega-Savala has a 2005 conviction for DUI.

The unauthorized immigrant suspected of killing Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and his Uber driver in a drunk-driving crash is facing state and federal felony charges.

Orrego-Savala does not now have an attorney, but one will be appointed before Wednesday morning's initial hearing.

Trump on Tuesday tweeted that it was "disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed @Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson".

Both men were outside the auto when a black Ford F-150 drove into the shoulder and struck the vehicle.

"According to court documents and jail information, Alex Cabrera Gonsales is the same person as Manuel Orrego-Savala, the man now in custody in Marion County for allegedly causing Sunday's crash", Meyer said, according to WBIC Indianapolis.

The two most serious charges each carry maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

"This was a completely preventable tragedy", he told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

Trump also offered his "prayers and best wishes" to Jackson's family. "Much of such commentary, including tweets by the president, fails to acknowledge that both Edwin Jackson and Jeffrey Monroe lost their lives on Sunday".

Meyer says he is working with Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry about opening an investigation into possible identity crimes Orrego-Savla may have committed while living in Indiana.

In this darkest moment, we choose to remember Edwin for the wonderful things he accomplished in his short time on earth, including the Edwin Jackson 53 Foundation that he started to empower athletes and youth.

Orrego-Savala is being held in Marion County jail and is awaiting charges.
