Two Isis 'Beatles' are stripped of British citizenship

The militia group, abbreviated SDF, detained Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh in eastern Syria, reports the New York Times, citing government officials who spoke on background.

She says "their crimes are beyond imagination".

David Haines was murdered by the so-called "Beatles" cell of four British militants in 2014. Haines said she wanted to "look them in the eye and let them know I am who I am and they have certainly destroyed a big part of my life". "These men will have important intelligence about the fates of Western hostages in their custody, including some who remain captives of Islamic State".

He said: "What I want is an incontestable trial, as fair as possible, where my captors would have all the chances to defend themselves. If they don't get justice, they will use it to fuel their propaganda".

Shiraz Maher, a senior research fellow at the International Center for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence at King's College London, told the AP that the capture of Kotey and Elsheikh is "hugely significant for a lot of the Western countries who had hostages who were captured by Islamic State and hopes that they are brought to trial because it will help bring closure to their victims and send a message to anyone who considers joining IS or other extremist groups".

All four members of the group lived in West London before moving to Syria.

It is understood that Kotey and Elsheikh have been stripped of their British citizenship, but the Home Office says it can not comment on individual cases.

Elsheikh arrived in Britain as a child when his communist-supporting parents fled Sudan.

The SDF gave United States special forces access to the two men after suspecting they were foreign fighters, the Times reported.

The Britons had always been identified by British and American intelligence as playing an integral role in the IS team feared for its brutality against foreign captives held in the self-declared caliphate's capital of Raqqa.

The State Department said "Elsheikh was said to have earned a reputation for waterboarding, mock executions and crucifixions while serving as an IS jailer".

The group, which also included "Jihadi John" Mohammed Emwazi and Aine Davis, was nicknamed The Beatles by hostages because their English accents set them apart from other foreign fighters.

He said that Kotey was being questioned but did not specify who by.

President Donald Trump has said that Islamist fighters captured on the battlefield in Syria and Iraq, including Americans, could be sent to the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Their capture presents Presdident Donald Trump's administration with a politically fraught decision: transfer the men to the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, or bring them to the U.S.to face federal terrorism charges.
