Asteroid expected to pass near earth early on Saturday, says NASA

The planet Earth is set to have a close encounter with a small asteroid today.

The "Super Bowl asteroid" garnered a lot of attention when it passed Earth right around the same time the big game kicked off Sunday.

It was discovered by NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey on February 4 along with a second asteroid that measured somewhere between 15 and 30 metres. The asteroid was estimated to be 55-65 feet in diameter.

On February 15, 2013, the Chelyabinsk meteor exploded over Russian Federation; about 7,200 buildings were damaged as a result of the impact and around 1,500 people were injured, mostly from broken glass.

Firstly, the object is relatively small, so it would cause a large number of injuries rather than killing billions of people and sending us back to the Stone Age. But NASA has said that 2018 CB will not harm our planet and will make a safe close flyby of the Earth.

It is expected to come within 39,000 miles of Earth at its closest approach.

Asteroid 2018 CB is the second small asteroid to buzz by the planet this week, according to NASA.

On January 6, an asteroid passed within 1,14,000 miles (1,83,000 km) of the earth. Scientists estimated the asteroid was 50-100 feet in diameter. These types of asteroids are classified as Potentially Hazardous Asteroids. Most asteroids are found orbiting in the Asteroid Belt, a series of rings located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The names of the two asteroids were 2018 CC and 2018 CB.
