Trump at National Prayer Breakfast: 'We are God's handiwork'

President Donald Trump is making an appearance for the second year in a row at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington.

Trump tweeted earlier Thursday he looked forward to seeing "great religious and political leaders".

Although Trump did not explicitly campaign as a religious leader, he has promoted himself as a defender of religious faith and has touted the centrality of God to American civic life.

"Trump has taken these government-endorsed prayer breakfasts to a new low, demonstrating his ignorance and disdain for the growing diversity of faiths and philosophies found in the country he's supposed to be leading", Mr. Speckhardt said in a statement.

"In every city and town, we see God's grace all around us ... through acts of generosity and kindness", said the president, who just a year ago spoke more often about "American carnage" in inner cities among gang members and criminals.

"Our founders invoked our Creator four times in the Declaration of Independence", he said.

"When Americans are able to live by their convictions to speak openly of their faith and to teach their children what is right, our families thrive, our communities flourish, and our nation can achieve anything at all". No matter what, no earthly force can take those rights away'.

"That is why the words "Praise be to God" are etched atop the Washington Monument", Trump said, "and those same words are etched into the hearts of our people. Our currency declares 'In God We Trust.' And we place our hands on our hearts as we recite the Pledge of Allegiance and pledge we are one nation under god". Trump said he was proof that "with God all things are possible".

Kelly traveled to the speech with Trump, a tacit acknowledgment that even as the fallout from Porter's departure ensnares the chief of staff, the President remains committed to Kelly.

He again spoke of the coalition "to defeat ISIS that has liberated nearly 100% of the territory just recently held by those killers in Iraq and all throughout Syria".

Trump did not make mention of the Porter controversy in the speech, but did tell the audience of religious leaders that the United States stands with people who "suffer under repressive and brutal regimes".

Rep. Steve Scalise, the Louisiana congressman who was shot previous year during a Republican baseball practice, served as the keynote speaker for the breakfast - replacing Vice President Mike Pence, who is in Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the Olympics opening ceremony.
