Women: The female protesters against giving women the vote

Even though Amber Rudd has guaranteed she could "take a look", it was not "straightforward" for legal pardons to be granted for illegal acts which include arson.

The move has been backed by opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, as well as descendents of those involved and equality campaigners.

The initial act of 1918 was supposedly needed to resolve the issue of soldiers returning from service in the First World War who were not entitled to vote.

Today, we are celebrating the right of women to vote, to have a say in their society's future.

Yet the tides of the Suffrage movement are still surrounded in misinformation and confusion, with several leading members and activists in the movement identifying as lesbian, bi, or simply as women who were attracted to other women.

'They made such sacrifices so that we could all enjoy the rights we have today.

They said "significant" strides had been made but more needs to be done, with gender pay gaps and pregnancy discrimination still existing much like they did a century ago.

At least the suffragists and suffragettes were united in their ultimate goal.

Last century's suffragettes are today's women human rights defenders.

BBC Radio 4 listeners voted Suffragist Dame Millicent Fawcett as the "most influential" woman of the past 100 years, but Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst has been mentioned nearly 3,000 times on Twitter in the past 24 hours. "She'd been Empress of the British Empire and most subjects hadn't kicked up a fuss about having an empress so why would they kick up a fuss about British women having a vote?"

With the passing of the Representation of the People Act in 1918, the suffragettes were successful in gaining some women aged 30 and over the right to vote - only 40% of women were initially granted the vote. But the suffragists failed to get results, and many campaigners decided a more militant approach was required.

Meanwhile, with celebrations marking the centenary taking place across the UK, Mrs May hailed "the enormous strides we have taken as a society" ahead of a speech in Manchester, the birthplace of universal suffrage leader Emmeline Pankhurst.

When Morgan asked her about the campaign calling for suffragettes to have their convictions overturned, the Home Secretary replied: "I think that's a more tricky one, if I may say".

"Suffragettes like the Pankhursts are well known, but there are many inspirational stories from the battle to secure the vote for women that are less well known".

But unlike her mother and sister, she maintained a political affiliation, which for many years was restricted by the WSPU. Before her death Davison was jailed eight times, went on hunger strike seven times and was force-fed 49 times.

Although she was twice put in Holloway prison, she advocated non-violent means of protest such as withholding taxes and census boycotts.

She called for greater action by social media companies to clamp down on abuse, and announced a review of the law relating to online offensive communications.
