Snow and ice to return as commuters face travel disruption

Wintry showers will develop in the west. Frost and ice will form also leading to hazardous conditions on untreated roads and footpaths.

"Accumulating snow will target Northern Ireland and Scotland on Monday night before shifting into Northern England and Wales by Tuesday morning".

On Tuesday the forecast is cold with a band of sleet and snow, giving accumulations to low-levels, will clear to heavy, wintry showers and sunny spells following behind from the north for the afternoon.

Mr Burkill said: "As we go through the next 24 to 48 hours, it's going to stay cold, and we are going to see some snow and pretty much anywhere in the country could see something".

He said there could be between 4cm to 7cm of snow, but many areas would get no snow at all.

Claire Kennedy-Edwards, senior meteorologist for The Weather Channel, said the heaviest snow will fall on Tuesday and Friday this week.

Snow and ice warnings have been issued for large parts of the country.

Severe weather is possible over the next few days and could affect you.

"Scattered sleet and snow showers are likely at times in Sussex".

The Met Office says there will be some roads or railways that will be affected to the point where delays will be inevitable.

Rain will quickly turn to sleet and snow as it moves southeast across the United Kingdom tonight and tomorrow.

"We expect widespread disruption to travel, transport and school closures with the cold likely to win out at least until the middle of this month". "Lowest temperatures 2 to 5 C".

Cold and clear with sunshine Wednesday, ahead of a cloudier and breezier Thursday with a little rain and sleet.
