Washington considers tagging QB Kirk Cousins — ESPN's Schefter

ESPN reported Sunday that the Redskins are discussing using the franchise tag to retain Cousins for the objective of seeking a trade to recoup assets after agreeing to a deal earlier this week to acquire Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cousins' salary would be worth approximately $34.5 million for 2018 if Washington does place the franchise tag on him, according to ESPN, and a trade would be complicated. However, nothing will be too important until the actual free agency period gets rolling in March.

During his interviews on Radio Row on Monday, Cousins repeated much of what he said at his end-of-season event with 106.7 The Fan last month about winning being more important than money and the ball being in the Redskins' court.

Franchise-tagging him would force Cousins away from picking his new team in unrestricted free agency.

Washington was going to be a laughingstock when they lose Cousins for nothing after paying him $43 million the last two years.

Until Cousins signs the tag, Washington would be on the hook for the amount of his tag, which, because he was tagged previous year, would be approximately $34.5 million, or 120 percent of his 2017 salary. This means the Redskins are getting their quarterback of the future, as Smith has also signed an extension with the team. This will impact how other teams would approach the 2018 NFL Draft and free agency.

Could Kirk Cousins be the solution for the Browns quarterback problems? Cousins may also hold off on signing the franchise tag if there is no sign he could get a long-term deal that he wants from the team he is possibly traded to.

Kirk Cousins might not be cleared to check out of Washington just yet. The fourth-round pick from Michigan State was a Pro Bowler in 2016 and has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in each of his three seasons as the starter in Washington.

A report surfaced on Sunday that the Washington Redskins are still considering placing the franchise tag on their once considered franchise QB. I'm fully aware he hasn't had much of a running game and his weaponry dropped off this season.

Cousins will be looking for a job and will receive offers from any combination of those teams, but let's look at the case for him to join the Cleveland Browns.

Teams can begin utilizing the franchise tag on February 20. Cousins would be allowed to seek offers from other teams. That gives the team an opportunity to draft a playmaker or two on offense to help Cousins. Cousins told USA Today he spoke to owner Dan Snyder and coach Jay Gruden, but not team president Bruce Allen.
