20 more flu-related deaths in the past week

Gov. Cuomo has encouraged New Yorkers to get the flu shot "as the number of influenza cases and hospitalizations continue to rise at alarming levels".

In Indiana State Department of Health reports from 2017 there were just nine deaths related to the flu, but this year, the tally is 107 for the same time period three weeks into the year.

Another influenza-related death has been recorded in Northwest Oklahoma, bringing the total to six since September 1, 2017.

The total includes 20 deaths during the past week, four of them in Wake County.

There have been 95 flu deaths in North Carolina this season, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

Despite reports of shortages of vaccines and antiviral medications in some parts of the country, local, state, and federal health officials on Thursday confirmed to Newsday that no such shortages have been identified in NY.

Maryland Department of Health continues to track this year's flu, which remains classified as "high intensity" and with "widespread geographic activity". Hospitals have been admitting a high volume of patients with the flu or flu-like symptoms.

Influenza A (H3) has been the most common strain of influenza identified in Florida and throughout the nation. This is the best way of reducing your chances of getting sick and spreading the virus to others, according to Rumpf.

As for why King, Snohomish, and Pierce have the highest number of deaths, leaders logically point to the dense populations of those counties and vulnerable individuals within it.

"I absolutely still recommended that you get a flu shot", Sullender said.

She noted that the vaccine does not have a 100 percent efficacy rate and varies from year to year, but even if the efficacy is not great, the vaccine reduces the intensity of the disease and protects you from some strains.

If you think that there's a lot of flu going around this January, you're absolutely right.

While the flu season usually peaks between December and February, "It is not looking like we have reached the peak", said Ron Pundt, Coryell Memorial Healthcare System laboratory director.

"Getting an annual flu shot decreases the risk of getting the flu".
