Nintendo has sold more than 14 million Switch consoles since launch

In less than a year. The Kyoto-based company sold 7.23 million consoles in the quarter, bringing total sales to about 14.86 million units worldwide.

As this chart by Statista shows, the biggest up-and-comer is the Nintendo Switch, which has attracted tremendous attention from developers in the mere months since its March 2017 launch.

After launching in March last year, Nintendo has sold 14.86 million Switch units, almost 900,000 ahead of its 2017 target with three months left of its financial year.

"The momentum for Switch over the last 10 months has been stronger than that of the Wii", Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said on Wednesday. It sold more than nine million copies in its short time on the market.

In short, the Nintendo at the start of 2018 looks nothing like the Nintendo that started off 2017.

To put this in perspective, Wii U sold 13.5m units in five years. To put it into perspective, Wii U has been out for almost five years and sold 13.5 million during this time, while Switch only arrived 10 months ago.

This number beats out its predecessor's lifetime sales, which is an incredible accomplishment for a console that isn't even a year old. This was on sales of 857 bn yen ($7.8bn) and was buoyed by an operating profit of 156.452 bn yen ($1.44bn). "With the Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers and the promise of couch play on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we're proud to share the console experience of Death Road to Canada with players across the world". Again, Nintendo has increased its projections, stating that it expects to sell 53 million games this financial year. On the other hand, Nintendo may have a hard time equaling its impressive 2017 game release calendar in 2018.

KitGuru Says: In fact, it's hard to believe that the console has experienced such vast success in comparison to its predecessor even without these core features we've come to expect from a modern day console.

Nintendo also partly released the revenue for titles like Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem. In addition, of course, there's an impending core Pokémon game, that should see sales of the system skyrocket even more.
