French coastguard searches for Quiksilver boss missing at sea

A massive search was underway off the coast of France Tuesday for Pierre Agnes, the CEO of American retail sportswear company Quicksilver, after his powerboat washed up on a beach during rough weather conditions.

Two boats and three helicopters are now involved in a search to find Mr Agnes, according to authorities.

The region is known for having occasional risky waves.

Mr Agnes, 54, was declared missing by port authorities when he reportedly set sail on Tuesday morning but did not return.

The coastguard was alerted after Agnes' 11-metre vessel was found on the coastline on Tuesday.

"I'm praying for a miracle but it's just starting to hit me what a profound effect this man had on my life and the surf community at large", wrote Slater, who used to be sponsored by Quiksilver.

"He loved his morning fishing trips, family, Quiksilver, surfing, friends, motorbikes, Capbreton.I'm not even sure how to let it sink in".

Three helicopters and two boats were searching for Agnes while agents scoured the coast.

Quiksilver and Billabong both started out in Australia more than 40 years ago and used surf culture to sell clothing around the world.

Mr Agnes joined Boardriders Inc. - formally known as Quiksilver - almost 30 years ago and works out of the European headquarters near Biarritz.
