Users, Facebook is giving you more control over your privacy settings

Facebook has chose to share its privacy principles for the first time, as it begins an education campaign aimed at helping users gain an understanding of how the platform uses and manages their data. Not only will it teach you about the tools you can use, like who can see your posts, how to control what information they use to show you ads, reviewing old posts, and even deleting your account. As Facebook's chief privacy officer Erin Egan puts it, "Privacy controls are only powerful if you know how to find and use them".

Facebook said that it will introduce a "privacy center", a one-stop-shop within the platform for adjusting privacy settings.

"You own and can delete your information", says Facebook's fifth principle.

In addition, Facebook will begin hosting data protection workshops with small and medium businesses throughout this year, starting in Europe with an eye on the upcoming implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Facebook announced a new plan to be as ostensibly transparent as possible when it comes to management of user data, in preparation for an imminent strict European law.

"We recognise that people use Facebook to connect, but not everyone wants to share everything with everyone - including with us". And national regulators will be able to issue fines if companies collect personal data without consent or misuse personal data.

Facebook's latest moves don't include changing the way the company handles user data and it does little to address questions over how it aggregates and shares information.

On an inferring note, Facebook believes in the approach that "Improvement is constant" and hints that newer controls and tools will keep on coming in the future for the users. As massive tech companies, such as Facebook, Google and Twitter, rely on troves of consumer data to rapidly expand their operations and gain a larger influence in global society, the rules establish the importance of data privacy as a fundamental right.

The initiative is an example of how tech industry efforts to comply with the GDPR will spill over to users in the United States.

Last week, Sandberg told the European audience that it will make user privacy controls easier to access by putting them all in one place. "To do that, we need to build it into the design of the product".
