Trump wants to withdraw funding for International Space Station

The Trump administration would like to avoid a situation in which NASA is the sole or even principle customer of a commercial space station. The United States has spent almost $100 billion on the orbiting laboratory and has continually looked for ways to keep it flying. "Such a move would likely decimate Florida's blossoming commercial space industry, which is one of the reasons why Congress has directed NASA to look at extending the ISS to 2028 and to provide a plan to help scientists and researchers continue experimenting in low-Earth orbit beyond that". Since 1993 the USA has spent over $87 billion to build and operate it, with ongoing costs until 2024 estimated at between $3 and $4 billion per year.

Though Congress ultimately has final approval on the decision, the proposal itself spells bad news for NASA's worldwide partners and investors, as it sends a sign that the program lacks the government's full support.

However, despite this apparent opportunity for discussion, anonymous sources told the Verge that the directive to end funding for the International Space Station would be included in the final proposal to be submitted to Congress for final approval.

In 2014, the Obama administration extended ISS funding until 2024.

At present, NASA spends around $4 billion annually to support the ISS and the astronauts being housed there.

President Trump Plans to End ISS Funding by 2025

US President Donald Trump did sign a bill in March 2017 regarding transitioning ISS away from Nasa authority and funding, but the agency has not released information on that and has not responded to a request for comment on the matter as yet.

The White House has said repeatedly that it intends to recommit the nation to space exploration, in partnership with the private sector and the worldwide community. The administration also seeks to establish a space station, called Deep Space Gateway, in the vicinity of the moon.

To compensate for the lack of space shuttles, the plan was to get private companies involved. Commercial spaceflight companies don't want to see the station lose funding too soon, because they could then lose access to one of their primary test sites.

So far, the space station partners have committed to keeping the station funded only through 2024, but as Nelson said, the door is still open for an extension to 2028. "What also is a fact is the ISS is still the only game in town that we have at the moment".
