Guilty verdict in the death of former Chiefs running back

But he said physical evidence proved Gasser lied during extensive police questioning when he claimed McKnight lunged at him. "We're obviously disappointed with the verdict", he told The New Orleans Advocate as he left the courthouse.

Gasser faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced.

Louisiana's self-defense laws demand police "get it right", Normand said at the time.

The two reportedly began aggressively weaving through traffic before McKnight was followed off an exit by Gasser.

McKnight eventually exited his vehicle, at which point Gasser shot him through the passenger-side window.

The 56-year-old man had admitted to shooting McKnight on December 1, 2016 from the driver's seat of his auto and through the passenger's side window of McKnight's vehicle.

McKnight played running back for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014.

After six days of testimony in which the defence did not put forth a case, closing arguments started in a New Orleans courtroom today in the trial of Ronald Gasser. Jurors began deliberating Friday afternoon and came to a conclusion not long after.

Shute acknowledged that McKnight had a hand on the open, passenger side window of Gasser's vehicle before he was shot.

But Shute said Gasser had escalated the danger, taking McKnight's driving as a challenge.

A defense lawyer said McKnight was the aggressor throughout and Gasser fired in self-defense, fearing McKnight was about to attack him through his passenger window.

McKnight had been considered one of the best running backs in the country while playing at the University of Southern California in 2007.

Gasser's release ignited protests, and the authorities were accused of letting Gasser go because he is white and McKnight was black. He racked up 2,213 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 66 passes for 542 yards and two scores in three seasons. He later played for the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League.
