Michigan State AD Mark Hollis' retirement is too little, too late

Michigan State AD Mark Hollis' retirement is too little, too late

Students at Michigan State University will stage a protest to push for change at the institution and support survivors of Larry Nassar's sexual abuse. "Comfort, compassion and understanding for the survivors and our community; togetherness, time and love for my family", Hollis said.

Hollis said he didn't feel pressured to step down as AD, but talking with family and coworkers led him to the decision. "I know it's the right time to let people heal", Hollis said. More than 150 people provided impact statements to the court as part of that hearing, many of them taking aim at USA Gymnastics and Michigan State for their role in ignoring warning signs that might have stopped the formerly renowned physician from preying on young women and girls.

"Whether you are a victim or not of Larry Nassar your story matters", said Lindsey Lemke.

Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon submitted her resignation late Wednesday, hours after Nassar, a former employee at Michigan State, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for molesting young girls and women under the guise of medical treatment.

Many shoes have dropped since the trail of Nassar wrapped up and his sentence to spending the rest of his life and forever more beyond that in prison concluded. Four of the 21 board members have already stepped down. Board member Joel Ferguson apologized this week for saying previously that some victims were ambulance chasers seeking a payday.

Because it's possible the Nassar accusations were botched for years because Michigan State established a culture guaranteed to mishandle such issues.

In a Twitter post Friday, university trustee Mitch Lyons expressed regret that the school had failed to respond appropriately.

"We as students are the true Spartans", said Lemke Friday night.

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, one of the most innovative administrators in college athletics and the mastermind behind some of the most unique early season college basketball events, announced his resignation on Friday morning. The board also voted to appoint Bill Beekman, vice president and secretary of the board, as acting president.

Michigan State, USA Gymnastics, and the gymnastics group's parent organization, the US Olympic Committee, have denied wrongdoing. What's more, the school claimed it hadn't known about Nassar's alleged behavior until 2016. And if they do, it should be because the membership has clearly and unequivocally stated that they want the rules to apply to sexual assaults and schools are told in advance the expectations and standards.

Among other actions, student organizers said they want the school to host open meetings following the NCAA and attorney general investigations into the school.

"As tragedies are politicized, blame is inevitable", she said in a statement. They seek more changes.

"Since my first day on the job as athletic director, my focus has always been on the student-athlete", Hollis previously said on Wednesday.

The USOC has also demanded much tighter reporting from USA Gymnastics on reforms it is making.

Michigan State gymnastics coach Kathie Klages resigned previous year after she was suspended for defending Nassar.
