Drought-Stricken Cape Town To Lose Water Supply By April 12

City authorities have said residents will have to queue for water when levels drop to 13.5 percent, a figure expected to be reached in April.

Mokonyane hit back, saying several meetings were held with the City, the provincial ministry of local government, and environment and development planning departments in the Western Cape to manage and mitigate the effects of the drought on water availability for the province.

Earlier this year, the city published a name-and-shame list of the worst water offenders in Cape Town, and it says it is issuing fines for the heaviest water users.

Day Zero (predicted day non-essential supplies to be cut off): 12 April (revised down from 21 April last week).

Just last month such scenes would not have played out, but the increasingly worrying possibility of the city's taps running dry has forced residents into rethinking their sourcing and use of water.

South African Tourism CEO Sisa Ntshona added: "We are pleased that we have not received any reports of any tourism attractions and services interrupted by the water shortage and we appeal to tourists, and tourism businesses to continue being good responsible tourism citizens and continue being water-wise, even as the peak holiday season in South Africa winds down".

DA leader Mmusi Maimane introduced his new "Drought Crisis Team" yesterday and said he had taken the unprecedented step of taking political control of the responses to the water crisis. But she warned on January 18: "Despite our urging for months‚ 60% of residents are callously using more than the 23 gallons per day".

"Day zero has been heading in one direction and that's towards us", said Christine Colvin, a resident and freshwater expert with the World Wildlife Fund.

"And we have been pleading the ith national government to fulfil their responsibility of bulk water provision", said Zille.

At that point, the city's 3.7 million residents would have to line up at one of 200 locations for a rationed supply of clean water.

A typical shower uses 15 litres per minute while a standard toilet consumes up to 15 litres per flush, according to WaterWise, a South African water usage awareness campaign.

What we all need to do to avert Day Zero.
