Boris Johnson Is 'Descendant' Of Mummified Woman Found In Switzerland

It was well preserved due to a high level of mercury in the remains, often a sign that someone had been treated for syphilis.

Bischoff was Johnson's great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother, according to the BBC.

There was no gravestone to indicate her identity, but initial testing of her wooden coffin suggested it dated from the 16th Century. The highly-toxic substance was in fact more of a poison than a cure, though its presence allowed for the preservation of Bischoff's corpse.

She was laid to rest in the Basel church - but she was not fated to rest long: Based on archival discoveries, the team believes now that she was first found in 1843.

Boris Johnson has found a new way to make headlines: By being the distant descendant of a mummified corpse of a woman who has baffled scientists since she was discovered in a Swiss church more than 40 years ago.

Another clue: her body was riddled with mercury - a standard treatment for syphilis from the late 15th to the 19th Century.

Boffins managed to extract DNA from the mummy's toe and found with 99 per certainty that the mummy was Anna Catharina Bischoff, who was born in 1719 and died in 1787.

Researchers then set out to discover the genealogical tree of the woman.

It is reported she had seven kids but only two survived childhood.

Before appearing on the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are program in 2008, he said he thought he was "part Jewish, part French, part English, part American, part pterodactyl and, unpredictably, part Turkish".

She lived in Strasbourg with her church minister husband for much of her adult like. Five generations of von Pfeffels later, and we find Marie Luise von Pfeffel marrying one Stanley Fred Williams.

It was there that she contracted syphilis, while caring for patients affected by the disease.

Although she is referred to as a mummy, she had an ordinary Christian burial, and her body wasn't intentionally kept intact, according to the Business Insider.

Their daughter Yvonne married Osman Wilfred Johnson Kemal, and their son, Stanley Johnson, is Johnson's father.

The Foreign Secretary has previously spoken about his ancestors as "posh toffs" after learning about their upper class origins.
