Kentucky governor working to heal community following school shooting

Now, 20 years later and 30 minutes away - another deadly school shooting, this time at Marshall County High School.

15-year-old girl who was shot by a classmate at Italy High School yesterday is recovering and full of hope. Kentucky State Police said Bailey Holt, 15, was pronounced dead at the scene and Preston Cope, 15, died after being rushed to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

"Bailey Holt and Preston Cope were two great people". Vanderbilt University Medical Center says it has received five patients.

At least one hospitalized student suffered a broken jaw from falling and being trampled while trying to escape, Marshall County prosecutor Jeff Edwards said in a phone interview. Andre Banks pleaded guilty to shooting another student, who survived, at Fern Creek High School in September of 2014.

The suspect, a 15-year-old male student, was taken into custody, Bevin said.

"Some of the shootings at schools this year were suicides that injured no one else; some did not result in any injuries at all".

Marty Pollio offered condolences and support to Marshall County Schools on Tuesday.

Austin said her son was shot in the right arm, which might need to be amputated.

Melton said school resource officers are among the most valuable tools to keep kids safe.

Justin Trudeau said in a tweet on Tuesday afternoon that he had reached out to Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin to offer condolences on behalf of all Canadians.

Authorities previously said the teen would be charged with murder and attempted murder, but Darnall said the assault charge would be easier to prove than attempted murder and carries the same penalty.

"It is unbelievable that this would happen in a small, close-knit community like Marshall County", he added.

Soon after the shooting, there was a heavy police presence and ambulances at the high school, located in Benton, according to WPSD.

Marshall County Schools superintendent Trent Lovett said Wednesday that elementary and middle schools will resume classes on Thursday, stating that parents can attend with their children.

"This is a tremendous tragedy and speaks to the heartbreak present in our communities". The girl is recovering in hospital; her attacker fled but was later arrested.

Backpacks, cellphones and clothes were strewn in the main area where the shooting occurred, he said. "But please also remember the other innocent victims in this horrific act of violence".
