Foreign minister to attend Davos meeting Tuesday

Just two years ago, the Berne Declaration (now known as Public Eye), said it would stop picketing at Davos and holding its Public Eye Award (shedding a critical light on business practices), as it considered WEF an irrelevant economic platform "losing legitimacy".

A decade after the bankruptcy of USA investment bank Lehman Brothers helped trigger a global financial crisis that plunged economies into recession, Trump is expected to dominate much of the conversation even before his speech on the final day of the forum.

The SA delegation will highlight the work the government, working together with business and labour, is doing to ensure an improved economic outlook and nurture a higher economic growth trajectory.

The U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver a conference-closing speech on Friday.

Trump is expected to laud his tax plan in a speech on the final day of the WEF, which runs from January 23-26 under the banner "Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World".

Trump will be the first US president to attend Davos in 20 years, giving him a chance to mingle with the same elite "globalists" that he bashed in his 2016 presidential run.

The president will also meet with leading European businesses who have invested in the USA economy, White House officials said.

Listed as "Special Address by Donald Trump, President of the United States of America" on the WEF programme, the speech will be the final address made any by world leader at the event.

Team SA, led by Ramaphosa, will exploit the opportunity WEF presents to communicate that the country remains open for business, the delegation said.

'The US presence in Davos will also comprise key cabinet ministers and a strong participation of the Senate and the House'. Her post said the past year was filled with "many wonderful moments".

Among the other leaders attending are British Prime Minister Theresa May, Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu and several African leaders, including Zimbabwe's new president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In the face of charges of sexism, the forum this year has appointed seven female co-chairwomen, including Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, and Ginni Rometty, the CEO of IBM.

Trump, who is expected to bring his message of "America First", and will speak last among a parade of world leaders from places like India, France and Canada.
