Google could soon start selling audiobooks on Play Store

That section looks to also show up in Google Play Books. If the banner is any indication, they should appear sometime in the near future, perhaps as early as this week.

Play Store may soon have a dedicated section for selling Google audiobooks.

According to 9to5google, an advertisement banner appeared on Google Play for several users, which revealed that the audiobooks will be available for sale on Google Play. The banner reads "Audiobooks are now on Google Play". The banner seems to be appearing for not only the web but also the Google Play app from within the Android smartphone. An update for Play Books app specifically mentions "audiobooks", as well as audio playback controls like play and pause. Based on the speculation, we expect the launch before the end of Q1 2017. Audiobooks on the Google Play Store have been hinted in the past as well.

As of now, there is no information of when this specific section will be introduced, and how they will be accessed.

In addition, it appears that the roll-out of the Google audiobooks is not global as the banner is only visible to Android users in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia, according to AndroidHeadlines.

If Google is about to enter the audiobook market, it would see the company going head to head against Amazon once more; both giants are already in direct competition when it comes to cloud storage, smart speakers and a variety of other gizmos you probably don't need in your life.

Amazon now dominates the audiobook market with its ownership of Audible, the leading retailer of audiobooks. Android Police found references to Audiobooks in an APK teardown of the Google Play app back in November, and The Android Soul conducted an APK teardown of the latest update to the Google Play Books app, and found code for several new features, including audiobooks.
