US President Donald Trump blames Democrats for possible government shutdown

Republicans point out that the bill to avoid a shutdown needed 60 votes, and at least 10 Democrats, in the Senate in order for it to pass.

The move is likely to hit thousands of federal workers.

What the Public Says: A new Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted Monday to Thursday finds that 48 percent of Americans would blame a shutdown on President Trump and Republicans, while 28 percent would say Democrats are mainly responsible.

However, later reports say that Congressional leaders - including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer - are working to come up with a deal on the floor of the chamber. "That same fixation has them threatening to filibuster funding for the government". Essential services will still run.

The last time the government shut down was in 2013 over President Obama's healthcare plan.

"That is why we need to win more Republicans in 2018 Election!" And it's true that Democrats see a political opportunity in the wake of the president's alleged comments at a White House immigration meeting last week.

The last U.S. shutdown was in 2013 during the Barrack Obama administration. "Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country's ability to serve all Americans", Sanders said.

The shutdown is more unusual as the same party - in this case, the Republicans - controls both Congress and the White House.

Schumer had a 90-minute meeting with Trump on Friday in the Oval Office.

President Trump blamed Democratic lawmakers for a government shutdown Saturday, accusing them of "holding our Military hostage" over their demand that a short-term spending bill include protection for illegal immigrants brought to the country as children.

"Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown", the statement began.

Democrats had argued for an extension of four or five days to force both sides into serious negotiations on the immigration issue.

Even with that majority, the government shutdown was somewhat expected.

Earlier in the night President Trump tweeted that the Democrats were trying to interfere with the success of his tax cuts. Congress has until March 5 to vote on a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and "there's absolutely no reason to tie these two things together right now", Mulvaney said.
