After Zuma, SpaceX keeps pace in preps for next Falcon 9 launch

The company defended the performance of the Falcon 9 in response to media reports that the mission was a failure and that the spy satellite it launched fell into the ocean. However, post the liftoff there is no information about whether the mission was a success or a failure, and what was the goal behind sending the rocket through a private collaboration.

There's a brewing controversy surrounding SpaceX's recent launch from Cape Canaveral late Sunday night. The company cheered a successful liftoff and then the touchdown of its first-stage booster back on land so that it could be flown again, a practice created to lower the cost of spaceflight. However, the officials from SpaceX emphasized that their probe wasn't to criticize for the reported loss of the mysterious payload of USA government, after the takeoff on Sunday.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, the satellite failed to separate properly during the second stage of the mission and dived back into the Earth's atmosphere which caused the failure of the designated mission. "For clarity: after review of all data to date, Falcon 9 did everything correctly on Sunday night", she said.

SpaceX's review so far indicates that "no design, operational or other changes are needed", Shotwell said.

Last year was a banner year for the private space company with 18 launches.

As critics were quick to call SpaceX's reliability into question, the company rolled its new powerful rocket, the Falcon Heavy, onto the same launchpad at the Kennedy Space Center that hoisted the Apollo astronauts to the moon.

Results from the firing will be analyzed ahead of Falcon Heavy's demonstration flight around the "end of the month", according to CEO Elon Musk.

However, it appears that Zuma did not make it into orbit.

SpaceX hasn't said why the static fire test was pushed back.

The Falcon 9 rocket launched as scheduled on January 7 and the first stage of the booster landed in SpaceX's Cape Canaveral facility. "We are also preparing for an F9 launch for SES and the Luxembourg Government from SLC-40 in three weeks".

"They're concerned any failure might hinder their ability to get future national security launch contracts", said Brian Weeden, the director of programme planning for the Secure World Foundation, a space-policy think tank. The flight seemed to go off without a hitch, although we weren't given full access to video throughout the entirety of the flight or detailed telemetry data considering that this was a classified mission for the U.S. Military. On the other hand, SpaceX is also tight-lipped about the mission either.
