Raiders owner on Jon Gruden hire: It's a big f'ing deal

The Oakland Raiders confirmed today that they interviewed Martin, a former star QB for the Volunteers, for their head coaching vacancy before hiring ESPN analyst Jon Gruden. That ended up being Gruden's a year ago coaching, before serving almost a decade as ESPN's "Monday Night Football" analyst.

Oakland Raiders new head coach Jon Gruden speaks during a news conference at Oakland Raiders headquarters on January 9, 2018 in Alameda, California. Olson has been all over the map over his coaching career, making pit stops with the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars in some sort of offensive capacity. "But the game is still decided by players between the lines and we all have to adapt every year".

"Either way, hate the fact that we'll have to go against him next year", McVay said. I've had a chance to learn some things and see some things that I would've never gotten a chance to see as a coach and have had a chance to study different offenses, different defenses, and I've had a chance to get into personnel more. "I'm ready for another challenge, and I'm eager to prove I can do it", Gruden said.

Gruden succeeds Jack Del Rio, who was sacked following a season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that capped a disappointing 6-10 campaign for the Raiders. "But I have had some opportunities that are unique and I think beneficial as a broadcaster". Obviously, Derek Carr is a huge reason Gruden took the job. "He's coming into a great situation where he has a lot of good pieces in place already".

Gruden did not elaborate on whether he had final say in personnel decisions but said he would work closely with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie.
