McDONOUGH- To honor the legacy of Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., the Henry County NAACP has several events planned. Individuals are welcome to bring items they would like to donate to the MLK Day Celebration at Santa Cruz Bible Church or drop off their items at locations throughout Santa Cruz County between Jan 16-31. Day will also be an official holiday for the Cherokee Nation.

Commission and Habitat for Humanity joined forces Monday for a day of renovation at the former home of Daisy Bates in Little Rock to mark the beginning of a week of events leading up to the national King holiday on January 15.

"Break Every Chain" will be the event's theme and Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will be the featured speaker.

Last year Arkansas legislators voted to separate Martin Luther King Jr.

Students can join the Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at UNF and the Black Student Union for a screening of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech" on January 16. Baker encouraged employees and Cherokee Nation citizens to dedicate a day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed on Monday, Jan. 15. Nearby locations such as Castillo de San Marcos monument, Fort Matanzas, Fort Caroline and the Timucuan Preserve will all be open to the public. From the thousands of children who marched and were jailed in the Birmingham Children's March to Ruby Bridges and the many others who bravely integrated schools, to 15-year-old Claudette Colvin who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus nine months before Rosa Parks and so many more, our nation's history is filled with fearless children who stood up for what was right.
