Pakistan to Take 'Tough Stance' Against Trump If Aid Revoked

Pakistan to Take 'Tough Stance' Against Trump If Aid Revoked

On New Year's Day, President Trump reiterated his assertion that Pakistan continues to provide sanctuary to terrorists who are killing and injuring American troops and their allies in Afghanistan. The foreign ministry Monday night summoned the U.S. Ambassador to protest and seek an explanation. It was in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad where Usama bin Laden hid until U.S. Navy SEALS killed him in 2011.

The United States is likely to announce "suspension" of some financial assistance to Pakistan soon, as speculations swirl about impending punitive action by the Trump administration that has suddenly dialled up the rhetoric on a client state ungrateful of billions of dollars it has received in aid.

The funding cutoff followed President Donald Trump's ominous tweet earlier Monday the nation had "foolishly" given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the past 15 years, ending the posting with a defiant, "No more!" He reiterated longstanding allegations that Pakistan gives "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan". "If the funds that Pakistan receives from the USA are cut off, this can exert direct pressure on Pakistan and we welcome this effort".

As part of the "fight-to-win" strategy Trump called on Islamabad to cut support for militants who find a haven along the Afghan border and warned Pakistan would have "much to lose" if it did not comply.

Last month, Russian Consul General in Karachi Dr Aleksandr Khozin had said Pakistan and Russian relations were getting stronger and both the countries shared views on peace in the region. Last week, Pakistan's military warned the US against taking unilateral action against armed groups within its borders, fueling more concerns that Trump's approach is only stoking tensions with a country that is generally a useful ally. "And we make massive payments every year to Pakistan".

We will respond to President Trump's tweet shortly inshallah. Will let the world know the truth.difference between facts & fiction.

Nauert said that despite sustained high-level engagement with Pakistan's government, "the Taliban and Haqqani network continue to find sanctuary inside Pakistan as they plot to destabilize Afghanistan and attack USA and allied personnel".

Washington has long accused Pakistan, especially its security institutions, of turning ignoring or covertly helping the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani terrorist network to stage cross-border attacks against Afghan and USA -led forces.

The State Department's declaration signalled growing frustration over Pakistan's co-operation in fighting terrorist networks.

On Wednesday, Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi offered to "review [our] cooperation [with the United States] if it is not appreciated".

The US carried out some 60,000 attacks from Pakistani soil, it said.

On Tuesday, she had said the administration would in the "next 24 to 48 hours" present Pakistan with a list of "specific actions" it needed to take on combating terrorism to keep the aid flowing. Pakistan has increasingly turned for economic support to northern neighbour China, which is investing tens of billions in transportation links and power generation as it extends its strategic footprint across Asia.
