Fodder scam sentencing: Lalu Yadav's son Tejashwi targets Nitish Kumar

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and Rs 5 lakh fine by Ranchi CBI court in a fodder scam case. Lalu Prasad is lodged at the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi while the sentence was announced via video-conference. The court also imposed Rs 5 Lakh fine on Lalu.

In the first fodder scam case, Lalu was sentenced to five years in jail. "But they should remember that we still have High Court and Supreme Court to appeal against the judgement by CBI court", said Tejashwi.

On Friday, Lalu Prasad sought a minimum punishment citing health issues. "If he fails to deposit the penalty money, it will amount to six more months of imprisonment to him", Prabhat Kumar, counsel for Lalu Prasad told media persons.

Earlier in the day, Lalu's wife Rabri Devi has called an emergency meeting to decide the individual roles for party leaders in likely absence of the RJD chief.

Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted in the multi-million-rupee fodder scam. Trial began before the special CBI court, Ranchi in February 2002.

The 16 convicted include three former IAS officers: Phoolchand Mandal, Beck Julius and Mahesh Prasad.

In 1996, the Patna High Court had ordered an inquiry into the fodder scam cases and a charge sheet in the Deogarh Treasury case was filed against 38 people on October 27, 1997.

There were 34 accused in the case, out of which 11 died during the trial, while one turned CBI approver and admitted to the crime. They were pronounced guilty for engaging in fraudulent transactions worth Rs 89 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury between 1991 and 1994.
