Amazon Brings Cooking Capabilities To Alexa Smart Home Skill API

Amazon Brings Cooking Capabilities To Alexa Smart Home Skill API

Amazon Alexa's multiple smart home integrations and Google teaming with Nest and Apple HomeKit also are expected to fuel sales of smart speakers.

The catch, as you might imagine, is that your ovens and microwaves need to support this feature, and nearly all "smart" versions now don't.

According to CNBC, the retail giant has been negotiating with a range of major companies, such as Clorox and Procter & Gamble, to let them promote their products via Alexa. Appliances that have pre-sets are needed - like microwave ovens, conventional ovens, and presumably other cooking devices like slow cookers and perhaps bread makers. While you won't be able to ask Alexa for cookies and have a tray of piping-hot chocolate chip emerge from the nearest Echo smart speaker, it will allow manufacturers to bake the the assistant into their upcoming microwaves.

"Customers are increasingly using voice user interfaces as a hands-free way to manage their lives, and hands-free control is especially valuable when cooking", Mass wrote to developers.

If you own a smart microwave or oven, you might soon be able to control it with Alexa. These new capabilities are made possible through Amazon's Smart Home Skill API.

Having said that, Amazon has now announced an interesting use case or feature for Alexa. "Cooking capabilities will also be available in other countries soon", Amazon has stated. For example, a user can say "Alexa, defrost three pounds of chicken" or "Alexa, microwave for 50 seconds on high".

Manufacturing partners that have signed on to the program include GE Appliances, Kenmore, LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool.

The new feature, called Flash Briefing, is easily set up after downloading the Amazon Alexa app on an iOS or Android device.

If Amazon does launch paid ads on Alexa, and follows through on other digital advertising projects such as videos, it could finally dominate in the one area where it has often lagged far behind other tech companies.

This year, smart speaker shipments in the USA are expected to reach 38.4 million units.

The Fire TV Stick's biggest shortcoming is that it's still very US-centric.
