Daughter of Eric Garner Declared Brain Dead

"She's not gone, she's brain dead", Erica's mother told the pub.

The Rev. Al Sharpton also prayed with the family at the hospital, the New York Daily News reported. Erica, who'd worked as an anti-police brutality activist after the death of her father, suffered a heart attack last week.

Following a heart attack, activist Erica Garner has reportedly been listed as brain dead.

Her mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, said her daughter's cardiac arrest was triggered by an asthma attack. Garner emerged as a fiery critic of the NYPD and police brutality after Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo killed her father in July 2014 using a chokehold-a technique the department had banned.

"Please continue to pray hard for Erica and pray for her family and kids just as much", it added.

A worker running Garner's Twitter account stated Wednesday night that a "cat scan shows Erica suffered major brain damage from a lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest".

She has been in a coma since then, it said. The city of NY settled with Eric Garner's estate for $5.9 million in July 2015. Eric Garner, 43, repeated the phrase "I can't breathe" 11 times as Pantaleo tried to take him into custody for selling loose cigarettes.

"My thoughts are with Erica Garner, her family and friends in hoping that she has a full recovery and rejoins the struggle for justice as soon as possible", Sanders wrote on Twitter. She became a prominent civil rights leader and met former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2016.

Erica Garner is still in critical condition after suffering a heart attack on Christmas Eve.
