Google To Open Physical Stores In India To Push Pixel Sales

Google is reportedly gearing up to open brick-and-mortar stores in India to boost the sales of its Pixel smartphones.

After the launch of Pixel 2, Google tested the pop-up stores in Mumbai and Delhi NCR.

While Google hasn't confirmed the reports, setting up retail in India could help the company compete with Apple and Samsung, as well as Chinese-made phones from XIaomi, Vivo and Oppo, notes TheEconomic Times. As offline stores seem to be a big deal now for the Indian smartphone market as it overtook the United States as the second-largest smartphone market in the world, every brand, including Google, may fall short without any offline presence.

While, Google hasn't officially commented on this matter, the report cites sources claiming that these stores could come up sometime in the latter part of 2018.

It is not clear whether Google is planning to the same in other countries or not, but in the US, Google already has two pop-up stores in New York City and Los Angeles.

These new stores will be able to offer the latest Google products such as the Google Home smart speakers, Daydream and View VR headsets and other such accessories.

Google has been financially backing up small companies in India, and also providing them proper mentorship from top technology companies in Silicon Valley. "So, maybe this could (have encouraged Google) for the decision (to open outlets)", said a senior executive at one of the malls where Google had setup the pop-up store.

Spice had said it planned to open 50 AndroidLand outlets in 18 months but the venture folded up with the two stores in Select Citywalk in Delhi and The Great India Place Mall in Noida shuttered due to poor sales. Many large format retail stores have dedicated store-within-stores for the Pixel as well.

"We had done two stores as part of the pilot and then we could not proceed with the project as they did not meet with our desired objectives", said Dilip Modi, chief executive of Spice Connect, according to ET.

What is not clear, however, is the exact route the company will take to set these stores up. The likes of Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi have their stores run by other franchises in India.
