Facebook Becomes Even More Intrusive by Asking Users to Map Their Face

The new features are being rolled out in the face of growing pressure on the company from regulators in Europe, the USA and elsewhere who have criticized Facebook for spreading fake news, fostering hate speech, eroding civil discourse and trampling privacy rights.

"We want people to feel confident when they post pictures of themselves on Facebook so we'll soon begin using face recognition technology to let people know when someone else uploads a photo of them as their profile picture".

The new features were being rolled out on Facebook everywhere except Canada and the European Union, where face-recognition technology is not employed, according to Candela.

That's a question people will be asking as Facebook rolls out new tools this week to help users better manage their identity with face recognition. If your tag suggestions setting is now set to "none", then your default face recognition setting will be set to "off" and will remain that way until you decide to change it. It then compares newly uploaded images to the template.

When photos of you are uploaded, even if you aren't friends with the person adding them, Facebook will notify you. Users will need to change it to "Friends", and the Photo Review will be turned on. Soon, you will begin to see a simple on/off switch instead of settings for individual features that use face recognition technology.

However, the thought that Facebook will be scanning every photo may not be acceptable to some.

The California-based company was also putting the technology to work to give visually impaired people more information about images at Facebook.

Facebook had launched an automatic alt-text tool two years ago, which describes photos to people with vision loss. Since new facial recognition technology is now being added to devices and applications everywhere - Apple's iPhone X is the flawless example here - it comes as no great surprise that Facebook would be next to incorporate some kind of facial scanning in its own platform.

"We recognize that there are a lot of different views on this issue and lots of different approaches to providing people with transparency and control", the company said in a statement.
