They circulated pictures of Ahed when she was a little girl raising a fist in front of Israeli soldiers.

The footage that ultimately led to Tamimi's arrest shows her flanked by two other teens yelling at, hitting and later slapping two Israeli soldiers.

Israeli forces on Tuesday detained a 16-year-old Palestinian girl during an overnight raid in the occupied West Bank.

The army later confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying the teenager took part in violent protests in the Ramallah area on Friday in which 200 soldiers were attacked by Palestinian rioters.

According to father of Ahed, Bassem Tamimi, a large Israeli force raided the family home at dawn and arrested Ahed Tamimi while she was sleeping in her bed.

On Monday night, the army balanced the scales by arresting the girl who had instigated the troubling encounter.

Since news broke of Tamimi's arrest, netizens have reacted and launched a social media campaign under the hashtag, #FreeAhedTamimi, in the hopes of pressuring Israeli officials to release her from custody.

The army said that the soldiers "acted professionally and were not dragged into violence", though they could have arrested the girls.

"The soldiers didn't respond", it added.

The al-Tamimi family is well-known internationally for their activism against the Israeli occupation, with Ahed in particular being the subject of several viral videos in which she defiantly stands up to Israeli soldiers who regularly raid her village in the central West Bank Ramallah district.

Meanwhile, this afternoon, Israeli soldiers kept on shooting tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at people protesting at the checkpoint at the entrance of the village.

In 2012, Ahed was awarded with "Hanzala Courage Award" by Basaksehir municipality in Istanbul for challenging Israeli soldiers, who had arrested her brother. The video of her confrontation with the soldiers was widely shared by pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian activists on the web.
