Vivo smartphone beats Apple and Samsung to the punch with new tech

While I expect the likes of Samsung, LG, and Google to jump at the chance of hiding a fingerprint sensor under a smartphone's display, it seems none of them will be doing it first.

Vivo, a company whose name might not be familiar to you, is actually a top-five smartphone maker thanks to its large presence in Chine.

Forbes reported that Synaptics has made an announcement with Vivo that is figured out how to integrate the fingerprint sensor in a smartphone display.

Apple recently abandoned its fingerprint scanner in favour of Face ID, partly because the new iPhone X has no space for a home button.

And it sounds like the scanner might work well.

Tech analyst Patrick Moorhead has been trialing the new device and said it works faster than he expected. In the company's press release, it specifically mentioned that the Clear ID fingerprint scanner is designed for smartphones with "infinity displays", which is also what Samsung calls the displays that are on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.

"The Clear ID experience was fast and simple", McDonald said in an opinion piece.

The company announced that it is going into full production with what it described as "top five original equipment manufacturers (OEM)".

We couldn't also omit any of the Chinese manufacturers from the possible list, especially when considering the eagerness shown by the companies in embracing new technologies. The whole setup also uses the built-in accelerometer in the phone and other sensors to know when to activate the fingerprint reader and light up the appropriate part of the display.

Vivo isn't particularly well-known in Western markets, but is popular in India as the fourth-biggest smartphone maker and holds a similar position in China. Even so, Synaptics is ready to ship 70 million sensor units next year, and it's unlikely that Vivo will buy them all.

In-screen fingerprint sensors have been considered as a natural evolution of modern biometric sensors as the smartphone displays this year moved to an edge-to-edge concept. Better yet, it still functions with the same security and dependability as a conventional fingerprint sensor, meaning it can be used not just for unlocking, but payments as well.
