Toyota and Panasonic look at viability of auto prismatic battery business

The news follows not long after the announcement that Toyota and Mazda had created a joint venture focused on electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and is being pursued for the same reason: Toyota execs have publicly promised that "green cars" (plug-in electric + hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles) will comprise half of the company's global sales by 2030.

According to Reuters, Toyota and Panasonic are considering joining forcing in developing electric batteries for vehicles.

Toyota has previously announced that it plans to bring a auto to market with potentially revolutionary solid-state batteries by 2022.

"The auto industry faces many hurdles to developing next-generation batteries which are hard for automakers or battery makers to tackle on their own", he added. "In order for Japan to survive this era of profound change with no natural resources, we must develop competitive batteries and establish systems for a stable supply", Toyoda said.

Both Toyota and Panasonic are now inviting other companies to help form new battery standards as well.

Electric-powered vehicles now represent around 15 percent of the roughly 10 million units Toyota sells annually - mostly hybrids such as its best-selling Prius.

"The pair plan to expand development of prismatic - flat, pouch-shaped - batteries with higher energy density". The agreement between the two companies indicates that they will analyse prismatic battery usage across the automotive world and look to lowering their price while raising the bar on performance and safety. Prismatic batteries have packaging and cost benefits compared to more conventional cylindrical cell designs.

Toyota and Panasonic have worked together since 1953 and Panasonic's traditional batteries are already widely used across the automotive industry in EVs, including in various hybrid models produced by Toyota.
